NEC joins 5Growth efforts towards validating advanced 5G trials across multiple industries in four different pilots in an operational environment

London, United Kingdom & Heidelberg, Germany, July 22, 2019 - NEC Europe Ltd. today announced that NEC Laboratories Europe joins the European H2020 5G Public-Private Partnership (5G-PPP) 5Growth project.

The main objective of 5Growth is the technical and business validation of 5G technologies from the industry’s perspective, conducting field trials (TRL 6-7) to increase exploitation opportunities in products, services, and markets, hence economy and society at large and to optimize the performance using automation and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven solutions.
The project will conduct trials in close collaboration with telecommunication providers and operators at four industrial sites in Spain, Italy, and Portugal covering the industry sectors of Industry 4.0, transport, and energy.

5Growth will leverage on the results of 5G-PPP Phase 2 projects, where slicing, virtualisation and multi-domain solutions for the creation and provisioning of vertical services are being developed and validated with specific Proofs of Concept, e.g., 5G-TRANSFORMER and 5G-MONARCH.

5Growth is part of H2020 5G-PPP, a joint initiative between the European Commission and European ICT industry which aims to deliver solutions, architectures, technologies and standards for the next generation of communication infrastructures of the coming decade.

The project, launched in June 2019, is led by a consortium of 21 partners from seven European countries and will run for two and a half years until the end of 2021. The project received a grant of €14.1M from the European Commission.

The consortium includes global telecommunication vendors (Ericsson, InterDigital, NEC, Nokia), operators (Altice, Telecom Italia, Telefonica), industrial partners COMAU (Industry 4.0), EFACEC (Transport and Energy), INNOVALIA (Industry 4.0), SMEs (Mirantis, Nextworks, Telcaria), and research institutes and universities (CTTC, Instituto de Telecomunicações, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Politecnico di Torino University, Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna and University Carlos III of Madrid).

The 5Growth vision is to empower industries with a shareable 5G end-to-end solution that will allow them to achieve their key business and performance targets simultaneously. 5Growth will automate the process for supporting diverse industries through:

  • i.A vertical-oriented frontend providing a common entry point and interface and an advanced customer portal, in charge of interfacing verticals with the 5G end-to-end platforms, receiving their service requests and building the respective network slices;
  • ii.Closed-loop automation and SLA control for vertical service lifecycle management;
  • iii.AI-driven end-to-end network solutions to jointly optimise resources provided across all the network and application segments (access, transport, core, cloud, edge and fog), and across multiple technologies and domains.

5Growth will impact international standards related to specific industries, e.g., EN50126 (IEC62278) for railway signalling, as well as the 5G standards at 3GPP, ETSI MEC, ETSI NFV, ETSI ENI, and ITU-T FG ML5G/NET2030. Furthermore, 5Growth also inherits the open source spirit of 5G-TRANSFORMER and also plans to have an impact in this area.

"NEC will lead the technical work in this project, including the design of important 5G system management innovations, and main focus will be on developing a service-oriented, federated, and secure platform to manage vertical use cases over 5G " said Dr. Xavier Costa, Deputy General Manager at NEC Laboratories Europe.
